Great Advertising Increases Website Profits

Your advertising strategy will greatly influence the income you make from your site in many ways. Firstly, the type of
advertising you do will influence whether your site visitors click on an ad or affiliate link, make a purchase, or leave
your site with just the information they were seeking.

Please realise that the conversion rate for visitors to clicks or purchases is very low regardless of your advertising
strategy, so anything you can do to optimise your chances will be beneficial.
However, since it is a percentages game, the more visitors who come to
your page, the more conversions you will get. For example at a
conversion rate of 10% if you get 10 visitors to your site, then 1 will click
through. If you get 100 visitors to your site however, 10 people will click
through. So it is equally important to keep the search engines happy so
they rank you highly, and bring more visitors to your site.

The best way to get higher ranking, and thus visitors to your site is to
provide excellent quality content. There are other things you can do to
help improve your rankings. These are covered in my SEO page.

Once your visitors are on your page - that is where your advertising
strategy affects your click through rate.

Well-placed ads, which are targeted to your visitor's interests, will bring
you a higher click through rate than ads that have little or no bearing on
the subject. No matter how much you love a particular ebook about
marketing for example, it is probably not going to appeal to visitors on a
fishing site.

Of course you can put the ad on your page anyway on the off chance
that one of your fishing visitors is also interested in marketing, but there
are risks in doing so, and they may well outweigh any benefit.
Sites that look like a sales pitch can put off many visitors. If they were looking to buy something when they logged on,
they probably would go straight to an online store. By choosing to come to a content site, your visitors are primarily
looking for information. If they happen to see a product advertised which relates to the information they were seeking
they may click through and check out the product as well, but that is not tie primary intention or purpose of their visit.

To avoid the sales pitch look it is important to match your advertising panel's look and feel to your website, giving your
visitors a seamless experience.
You will need to decide what campaigns you will run on what pages.
It is always tempting to place everything on every page - after all the
more opportunities you give your visitors to click the more money
you will make. This can be flawed thinking unless you carefully
consider style and placement.

All of you should be looking for a combination of adsense panels,
affiliate links and if suited to your site, eBay panels.

If you place the majority of your affiliate links as in-text links the way
I have done on this site, you will improve the look and feel of your
site, and increase your click through rate as text links are often in
the form of a personal recommendation.
If you place both adsense and eBay panels on your page, limit yourself to one of each, and separate them with a
descent chunk of text. If you are only going with adsense, then you can put a couple of boxed panels in your text
instead of pictures.

Using my site as an example, imagine one or two of the pictures were replaced with adsense panels of similar size
and shape, which house ads targeted specifically to the content of the surrounding text. You don't have to worry
about doing this, the adsense script will do it all for you once you have placed it on your page.
Some web masters like to have side bars which contain advertisements
such as adsense panels and Amazon mini shop panels. Its up to you
whether you choose this method or not.

Keep in mind however, that volume affects your profit so you want to
look at the percentage click through rate per visitor per month rather
than purely at profit for the month. There are hundreds of articles and
ebooks available that discuss the best placement for advertising on
websites, and they all contradict each other, so my advice is go with
what fits with the look and feel of your site.

On this site, my "voice" is one of conversation, so I don't want side
panels or anything to detract from the personal nature of your
experience. That may ultimately affect the amount of click through I get
either positively or negatively.

My recommendation is to trial different advertising campaigns and
layouts for a month each, watch your click through statistics with
adsense and any other advertisers you place, and watch your web
statistics (provided by mots hosting companies) to evaluate their
effectiveness.
That completes your introduction to advertising, so please follow me to my SEO page for the second part, how to
optimise your page to increase your search engine rankings.
